Why Masella

Masella sits on the southern, sunnier flank of the ridge that forms the Alp 2500 ski domain in Catalonia's Cerdanya valley. On a clear February morning you can roll out of your Barcelona hotel at seven, be sipping coffee somewhere outside Vic by eight, and have your boots clipped in at the base station by half past nine. There are few places in Europe where you can ski a proper 900-metre vertical descent so close to a Mediterranean city — and fewer still where the resort stays this quiet.

If you have skied La Molina over the ridge, Masella will feel like its calmer sibling. The pistes are wider, the trees come further down the mountain, the queues are shorter outside Spanish school holidays, and the whole place catches the morning sun because of the south-facing orientation. It is a resort for skiers who want to spend their day actually skiing rather than queuing — intermediate cruisers, strong beginners stepping up to red runs, and advanced skiers looking for an easy day between harder stations.

Who this day tour suits

Our Masella day tour is designed for independent intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. If you are comfortable linking parallel turns on a red run, know how to get on and off a chairlift without help, and have your own ski clothing with you in Barcelona, you are the right fit. The tour is not an instruction tour: we do not provide ski school lessons, and we don't recommend first-time skiers come with us — Masella has a very good ski school for that, but it needs more than a one-day visit.

Groups work well because the minivan transfer and the driver-guide are a flat cost. Two people pay more per head than four, so if there's a pair of you considering it, see if a friend wants to come along. The maximum group size on this tour is six skiers in a single minivan; larger groups are possible with a second vehicle on request.

How a Masella day runs

Pick-up is at seven in the morning from the lobby or street door of your Barcelona hotel. Our driver will have messaged you the night before with the plate number of the minivan and their mobile number. We take the C-17 road north through Vic, where we usually stop briefly for coffee and a pastry — this is a working stop for us too, and the bakery is good enough that we have never minded the detour.

From Vic we climb through Ripoll and up into the Cerdanya. The last twenty minutes of the drive are the slowest and the most scenic, winding up past the Cadí tunnel and into the valley that holds the resort. By a quarter past nine we are usually parked at the base station. The guide walks you to the rental shop, helps you size boots and skis if you need them, and makes sure you have the day's lift pass before the queue builds up.

Then you ski. The guide stays with the minivan — not with you on the mountain — but they are reachable all day by phone if you need anything (an extra layer, a plaster, a change of equipment). Masella is big enough that a solid intermediate can spend six hours exploring different sectors without repeating runs. Our favourite warm-up is the long tree-lined blue La Pleta down to the Alp mid-station; from there Mig Pistes and El Pla sector tend to hold morning sun the longest.

Lunch is on you — most people stop at the El Pla restaurant halfway up the mountain, which has a sunny terrace and reliable mountain-food pricing. If the weather is cold, the Esteve bar near the base is cosy and warms you up quickly. Last lift down is at half past four. We ask you to be back at the minivan by five, which gives you time to drop the equipment, change out of boots and warm up before the drive home. You should be back at your Barcelona hotel between seven and half past.

What to pack

From Barcelona, bring: ski jacket and salopettes (warm, waterproof), base layers, mid-layer fleece, warm socks (wool or synthetic, not cotton), ski gloves, goggles, a buff or neck tube, and a helmet if you own one — rentals have them too. The sun at altitude in the Pyrenees is strong even in January, so sunscreen and lip balm are both useful. Bring a small backpack if you want to carry snacks, water or a camera onto the lifts.

If you don't own ski clothing, we can point you at a Barcelona ski rental shop near Plaça de Catalunya that rents entire outfits by the day. Mention this when you enquire and we will send details.

Price and what you'll pay on top

Our tour price (from €395 per person, group of 2) covers the private minivan, driver-guide, pick-up and drop-off, bottled water and the coffee stop. On the mountain itself you'll pay separately for the lift pass (around €56 per adult per day) and, if you need them, ski rental equipment (around €25 for skis, boots and poles). Lunch at a mountain restaurant is normally €18–28 per person. Add it up and a Masella day with everything included works out at roughly €500 per person for a group of two, down to about €400 per person for a group of four.
