Pyrenean ski resorts we visit from Barcelona

Three Pyrenean ski resorts are within comfortable day-trip range of Barcelona: Masella and La Molina in the Catalan Cerdanya valley, and the much larger Grandvalira in Andorra. Each has its own personality — this page is the short overview, and the resort-specific guides go deeper.

Spain · 74 km of pistes

Masella

Masella shares a lift-linked ski area with La Molina — together they form Alp 2500, the largest ski domain in Catalonia. On its own, Masella is a quieter, more family-oriented half: long cruising runs through pine forest, a south-facing orientation that catches the sun, and fewer people on the busy weekends than its neighbour over the ridge.

La Molina

La Molina was the first ski resort to open in Spain, back in the 1940s. It still has the busiest atmosphere of the three resorts we visit — lively on weekends, strong snowpark, a FIS-certified World Cup downhill descent, and a direct train service from Barcelona that keeps a steady flow of day skiers. The combined Alp 2500 lift pass links it to Masella.

Andorra · 210 km of pistes

Grandvalira

Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees — 210 kilometres of pistes spread across six interconnected sectors in the Principality of Andorra. Higher altitude, drier Alpine-style snow and considerably more variety than the Catalan resorts. The drive is longer, you cross a border, and prices on the mountain are duty-free: everything from fuel to a hot chocolate is cheaper than on the Spanish side.

Which resort should you pick?

For a short answer: La Molina if you want atmosphere and a snowpark, Masella if you want quiet pistes and sun, Grandvalira if you want the biggest ski area in the Pyrenees and don't mind the longer drive. Our side-by-side comparison article goes into the trade-offs in detail.
